GRID on iPad and iPhone

Well, somebody doesn't know how to blog properly.

It's been a while since I've updated this, and since that time, GRID Autosport has arrived on the iOS Store for iPad and iPhone, and we did a Twitch livestream to commemorate the event! Sadly, that was a while ago, but the full stream is due for a rerun in October. Witness Hannah's mad racing skills, and my weird inability to distinguish between the names Def Leppard and Led Zeppelin when under duress.

Some of the trickiest aspects of making a game such as this work on iOS are perhaps the things that aren't immediately apparent. Trying to strike the balance between performance and graphics isn't just about what chipset your phone has; simply the positioning and the type of material used to case a phone can have a huge impact of heat dissipation, and thus a huge impact on performance.

Also, GRID Autosport is a simulation style of racing game; the original game used several measurements from real cars to calculate the physics that would apply to the wheels, suspension, brakes, etc. This makes for a markedly different racing experience to an arcade style racer, and also has a big impact on CPU load.

Although GRID is a simulation racer, it still has arcade qualities; playing on Rookie or Professional mode is still an achievable challenge. Ask me how I know - yours truly was definitely on the 'how does this feel for players who suck at racing games' side of the playtesting and balance tweaking.
